Wyspa jest oddzielona od l\u0105du w\u0105skim kana\u0142em Mkanda.<\/p>\n<p>Oba miasta Manda i Takwa zosta\u0142y porzucone w pierwszej po\u0142owie XIX wieku, prawdopodobnie ze wzgl\u0119du na brak wody. W latach &#8217;60-tych, kenijski Departament Rolnictwa zaleci\u0142 budow\u0119 kilku betonowych zlewni, nazywanych \u201cjabias\u201d, by przechwytywa\u0107 wod\u0119 deszczow\u0105 na wyspie. Wybudowano dwa jabias i wiele rodzin przenios\u0142o si\u0119 na wysp\u0119.
